The calendar flipped to August, which in this country means the long national nightmare of caring about baseball in July is over. Football is back. NFL preseason games start this week, college kicks off in under four weeks, and the futures boards are already the most interesting thing on the internet. So we are doing a season preview, and we are starting it where a friend of the show planted his flag. When Michael Yo came on a few weeks back, we handed him the college football segment and he did not blink: the Miami Hurricanes, all the way. It was a bold call then and it is a bolder one now, given how last season ended for the Canes. So let’s preview the year through Yo’s pick and see whether the market thinks he is a genius or a homer. To the board.
TRADE 1: 2026 College Football National Champion
he market says wide open and it is not exaggerating. Ohio State lead the board at just 14%, with Notre Dame and Oregon tied at 13%, Georgia at 12%, and Texas at 11%. Five programs inside three points, which is about as flat as a title race gets. And here is the detail that makes the Michael Yo pick interesting: Miami is not in that group. The Canes sit outside the market's entire top five, a notch below Texas, despite playing in the national championship game eight months ago. So Yo is not just backing a contender, he is backing a team the crowd has ranked sixth or worse in a year the crowd cannot separate the top five. That is either sharp or sentimental, and last season offers cover for the optimists. The team that won it all last year, Indiana, opened at 100-to-1, went 16-0, and made the entire preseason board look like a group project nobody studied for. Ohio State get the top line on the strength of quarterback Julian Sayin and the best receiver in the sport in Jeremiah Smith, the safe and obvious case, which in this sport is precisely the case that tends to get buried in a bowl game. When the favorite is 14% and the defending champ was a 100-to-1 shot a year ago, a Miami ticket outside the top five is not a punchline. It is the exact kind of number that printed last January.
TRADE 2: Miami to Make the College Football Playoff
Here is the Michael Yo believer’s trade, and the market likes it more than the title odds suggest. Miami sits around -300 to make the twelve-team Playoff, an implied chance near 75%, with the miss priced at +220. The context is what makes this one sting or sing depending on your faith. Last season the Canes pulled off the biggest upset in Playoff history, knocking off Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl, rode it all the way to the national championship game, and then ran into the Indiana buzzsaw and lost 27-21. One game from the whole thing. This year Mario Cristobal reloaded through the transfer portal, handed the keys to quarterback Darian Mensah, and returns a roster the market trusts to reach the bracket even if it does not trust it to win it. That is the gap Yo is betting against. The market says Miami is very likely to be in the room. Whether they finish the job is the 9% question from Trade 1. Getting invited to the party is not the same as leaving with the trophy, and last January the Canes learned exactly how far apart those two things are.
TRADE 3: NFL Champion 2027
The pro game returns this week too, and the Super Bowl board is open for a season that has not thrown a competitive snap. The Los Angeles Rams sit narrowly atop a bunched, flat field, and after them the market cannot separate a dozen teams worth a look. That flatness is the whole story of an August NFL market. The crowd knows preseason football is a glorified scrimmage, knows a third of the league’s starting quarterbacks will tweak something before Labor Day, and prices the entire thing with appropriate humility. The value in early August is never the name at the top. It is whichever roster the market has not bothered to examine, the team one training-camp story away from a repricing. Check this board in six weeks and it will be a different document. That is not the market being wrong. That is the market admitting nobody knows anything yet, which is the most honest thing in all of football right now.
