Three sports, one incredible weekend. College football delivered the game of the year four days early: Texas edged Ohio State 24-23 in Austin, a genuine coin-flip result that matched a genuine coin-flip market, while Michigan held off Oklahoma 17-10 in a defensive slugfest in Ann Arbor. The NFL’s real opening slate followed Sunday, and it did not disappoint. Buffalo beat Houston 36-31 on a Josh Allen touchdown pass with 1:36 left, capping a wild back-and-forth game with nine lead changes and an MVP-caliber performance from Allen himself. Cincinnati beat Tampa Bay 33-27 behind 254 yards from Joe Burrow and a defense that forced four turnovers. And in Seattle, the Seahawks avenged nothing and proved everything, beating New England 13-10 in a much tighter rematch of February’s Super Bowl. Across the Atlantic, Arsenal made it two wins from two, beating Sunderland 2-0 to stay perfect, while Liverpool, Chelsea, and Tottenham all dropped points in draws. The Gunners are the only unbeaten team left among last season’s traditional top four.
That is a genuinely stacked weekend of results, and the futures markets are already repricing off it. Three names worth watching this week: a Giants quarterback nobody is talking about yet, the same striker who always wins this award, and a Miami quarterback who just doubled his odds in one Saturday night. To the board.
TRADE 1: NFL MVP
Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Joe Burrow occupy the top of this board, and after Week 1, all three did exactly what favorites are supposed to do. But the real value sits further down. Jaxson Dart enters his second season with a new head coach in John Harbaugh, the same coach who turned Lamar Jackson into an MVP in Baltimore, and a rookie year that already flashed real dual-threat upside: 2,272 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, and just five interceptions, plus 487 rushing yards and nine more scores on the ground, all in only 12 starts. He is not priced anywhere near the top names on this board right now. History says almost nobody wins this award outside the top tier of quarterbacks, which is exactly the risk here. But a coach with a proven track record of developing exactly this kind of dual-threat passer, on a roster getting Malik Nabers back healthy, is precisely the kind of longshot story that looks obvious in hindsight come December. This is the buy-low name on the board.
TRADE 2: EPL Golden Boot
Erling Haaland is priced as high as 69% to win his fourth Golden Boot, and the market has good reason to believe it. He has averaged 28 goals a season over the last four years and just claimed the award again last season with 27, well clear of the field. The Athletic’s own power rankings have him first among every player in the league, and no other striker realistically threatens that gap. Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres are the named chasers, both sitting in the mid-teens as distant longshots. This is the least suspenseful market in English football right now, which is itself the story: Haaland has turned a genuinely competitive individual race into a formality almost every year he plays, and the market has simply stopped pretending otherwise.
TRADE 3: Heisman Trophy Winner
It only took one game to reshuffle this entire board. Miami’s Darian Mensah threw for 401 yards and five touchdowns in a Week 1 win over Stanford, and his odds doubled overnight from 8% to roughly 15-16%, vaulting him into the outright favorite’s chair. That is the fastest a Heisman market has moved this early in a season in years. Behind him, Arch Manning and CJ Carr round out the top three, but the field is genuinely wide open beyond that, with more than 30 other names still splitting the remaining probability. Mensah gets to bank another easy week too: Miami hosts Florida A&M as a 53.5-point favorite, which should let him hold the top spot for at least another seven days. A market can move fast in September. Whether it stays moved through November is the actual trade.
