Here is why we love this sport. Quarterback William “Pop” Watson III threw for 197 yards and three touchdowns on 80% completion, UMass built a 24-7 halftime lead and never let go, and Rutgers, a Big Ten program that entered the year with real expectations under Greg Schiano, turned the ball over four times and converted just three of eleven third downs at home. UMass entered the game with a .041 win percentage in their FBS history when trailing by seven or more. They trailed 7-0 in the first quarter. History said this was basically impossible. Nobody told UMass.
That is the entire sport in one Thursday night. No algorithm predicted it, no market priced it above a rounding error, and it happened anyway, on national television, to a team that hadn’t tasted a win in almost two years. This weekend tries to top it. LSU hosts Clemson Saturday night in Lane Kiffin’s debut, with College GameDay setting up in Baton Rouge. Notre Dame travels to Lambeau Field to face Wisconsin in one of the sport’s better novelty venues. Neither of those games will be a bigger upset than what UMass just did. But college football in September doesn’t need bigger. It just needs another chance for the impossible to happen again. To the board.
TRADE 1: LSU vs. Clemson
Lane Kiffin’s first game as LSU’s head coach arrives with the full spotlight, College GameDay in town and a Clemson team standing across the field that has opened against an AP top-11 opponent in three of the last five seasons. Kalshi prices LSU at 77% to win, Clemson at 23%, on real volume behind the number. LSU brings in the nation’s top transfer portal quarterback addition in Sam Leavitt, who says he is fully recovered from the foot injury that ended his Arizona State season, while Clemson enters with an unsettled quarterback battle between Christopher Vizzina and true freshman Tait Reynolds. A 77% favorite hosting a ranked opponent in a season opener is a real number, not a formality, and Kiffin has never coached a snap in Death Valley wearing purple and gold. Saturday night tells you fast how real this roster overhaul actually is.
TRADE 2: Notre Dame vs. Wisconsin
Notre Dame travels to Lambeau Field, of all places, and the market treats it as close to a formality: 92% Notre Dame, priced as a three-touchdown favorite behind quarterback CJ Carr. Wisconsin went just 2-7 in Big Ten play a year ago under a staff that now sits on the hot seat, and the only thing keeping this number below the mid-90s is a spirited home-away-from-home crowd and a Wisconsin defense that ranks among the better units the Irish will see all year. A preseason top-five team playing its opener at an NFL stadium against a rebuilding Big Ten roster is exactly the kind of spot that should not be close, and the market is not pretending otherwise.
TRADE 3: NCAA Football: 2027 National Champion
The market remains a genuine three-way photo finish at the top: Ohio State at 14%, Oregon at 13.3%, Notre Dame at 13%, with Texas, Indiana, Georgia, and Miami all bunched between 10 and 11%. Nothing that happened Thursday night moves this number, because UMass and Rutgers were never going to touch this tier of the sport. Saturday can. LSU sits just outside this top group, and a statement win over a ranked Clemson team is exactly the kind of result that turns a fringe contender into a top-five conversation by Sunday morning. Notre Dame, already sitting inside the top three here, gets a chance to bank a comfortable, uneventful win that keeps their number exactly where it is. This is the fun part of September. The board has not separated yet, and one Saturday night in Baton Rouge could change that as fast as anything all season.
