The prediction markets had a reaction.

It was the second consecutive impressive performance from Maye, who appears to have rediscovered the form that made him an MVP finalist last season.

The Patriots have now won two straight, including a victory over Buffalo, and the market is starting to take notice.

New England’s probability of making the playoffs has climbed to 71%, up 10 points. Its chances of winning the AFC East have increased to 35%.

That’s a significant repricing for a team that was 1-2 just two weeks ago.

Elsewhere, Jeremiah Smith continues to separate himself from the Heisman field, Milwaukee has taken the first game of the NLCS, and the Bills face a consequential Monday night matchup against the Rams.

Trade New England to make the playoffs

Two weeks ago, the Patriots looked like a team trying to figure out what had gone wrong.

Now they’re beginning to look like a team that could make some noise in January.

The difference is Drake Maye.

Against Las Vegas, Maye completed 26 of 34 passes for 374 yards and four touchdowns without an interception. He also scored on a three-yard run.

New England generated 536 yards of offense and averaged more than eight yards per play.

The Raiders couldn’t stop anything.

Maye’s five-touchdown performance followed a three-touchdown passing game against Buffalo, giving him eight passing touchdowns over his last two starts.

The market is responding to something more meaningful than two victories.

It’s responding to the possibility that New England’s offense has figured itself out.

There are reasons for caution.

The Patriots are still 3-2. Their offensive line has suffered injuries, and the secondary remains thin. The AFC also has several teams capable of winning 11 or more games.

But the upcoming schedule creates an opportunity.

New England hosts the Jets next Sunday before traveling to Chicago and Miami. The market currently gives the Patriots a 75% probability of beating New York. Kalshi

At 71%, the playoff market isn’t offering much of a discount.

But if Maye continues playing anywhere near this level, New England’s probability could move considerably higher before November.

Market: 55%

Trade Jeremiah Smith to win the Heisman

Jeremiah Smith didn’t need another 200-yard performance to remind everyone who owns the Heisman race.

Two touchdowns were enough.

Ohio State beat Maryland 45-16 on Saturday, with Smith catching two first-half touchdown passes as the Buckeyes overwhelmed the Terrapins.

His Heisman probability has climbed to approximately 55%, leaving Miami quarterback Darian Mensah at 12% and Notre Dame’s CJ Carr at 7%.

That’s an extraordinary position for a wide receiver in October.

The challenge comes Saturday.

Ohio State hosts unbeaten Indiana in one of the biggest Big Ten games of the season. The Buckeyes are favored, but only at 61%.

Smith’s Heisman campaign has been built on memorable performances against increasingly difficult opponents.

Indiana provides another opportunity to deliver one.

Trade Milwaukee to win the World Series

The Dodgers entered the National League Championship Series as the favorite.

Milwaukee apparently didn’t get the memo.

The Brewers took Game 1 on Sunday night, beating Los Angeles 2-1 behind a solo home run from Brice Turang, an RBI single from rookie Luis Lara, and another impressive performance from their bullpen.

Milwaukee’s pitchers held the Dodgers scoreless over the final seven innings.

The market has responded.

Milwaukee now sits around 34% to win the World Series, virtually even with the Dodgers.

That’s a significant shift from Friday, when Los Angeles held a commanding lead in the championship market.

The Brewers won 103 games during the regular season, the most in baseball.

They’re now three victories away from the World Series.

The Dodgers have the stars and the championship pedigree.

Milwaukee has home-field advantage, an outstanding pitching staff, and the first game of the series.

3. YES: BUFFALO TO BEAT LOS ANGELES

Market: Buffalo 39% | Rams 61%

Trade Buffalo vs. Los Angeles

Monday Night Football features two of the NFL’s biggest quarterback stars.

The market currently favors Los Angeles at 61%, leaving Buffalo with a 39% probability of winning on the road.

That’s a meaningful discount for a team that entered the season among the AFC favorites.

Buffalo is coming off a loss to New England, while the Rams have had additional time to prepare.

But Allen remains one of the most dangerous players in football, particularly in games where the Bills are forced to rely on his ability to create offense.

The larger question is whether the market is reacting too strongly to Buffalo’s recent loss.

A 39% probability implies the Bills should win this matchup roughly four times in ten.

That feels like a reasonable place to challenge the consensus.

THE TRADE: YES ON BUFFALO

THE MISPRICING

DRAKE MAYE’S MVP PROBABILITY

The Patriots have a 71% chance of making the playoffs.

Drake Maye has approximately a 6% chance of winning NFL MVP.

Those two numbers are not necessarily inconsistent.

But they are worth watching.

Maye finished second in MVP voting last season. He has now produced consecutive standout performances, including Sunday’s five-touchdown game.

If New England keeps winning and Maye continues putting up numbers like these, his individual awards market could move considerably faster than the team’s playoff probability.

There is still a long way to go.

Brock Purdy, Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes and several other quarterbacks have stronger current MVP cases.

But the market is offering a reminder that team success and individual awards are priced separately.

The Dallas Cowboys had an 80% chance of beating Tampa Bay on Thursday night.

Nobody told Bucky Irving.

The Buccaneers entered Dallas winless, missing their starting quarterback and carrying just a 20% probability of victory on Kalshi.

Then Irving rushed for a career-high 165 yards, scored twice and helped Tampa Bay beat Dallas 24-16.

The Cowboys managed just 50 rushing yards as a team. Irving had a 72-yard run by himself.

Rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels played mistake-free football, while Dak Prescott threw two interceptions. Dallas committed three turnovers. Tampa Bay committed none.

It was the kind of game that makes prediction markets interesting.

The numbers tell us what the crowd expects. The games remind us why they actually have to be played.

And with the MLB postseason narrowing and a massive college football weekend ahead, there’s plenty left to price.

The Dodgers, Brewers and Rays are all moving on.

Los Angeles eliminated Atlanta in four games. Milwaukee did the same to San Diego. Tampa Bay made even quicker work of the Yankees, sweeping New York in three.

The market has responded by concentrating championship probability among the survivors.

The Dodgers now command 43% of the World Series market. Milwaukee sits at 25%, while Tampa Bay has climbed to 22%.

The interesting part isn’t that good teams are winning.

It’s how quickly the market is narrowing its view of who can win the whole thing.

THE CROWD BLEW IT

BUCKY IRVING AND THE 20% BUCCANEERS

Dallas was supposed to win Thursday.

Kalshi traders gave the Cowboys an 80% probability before kickoff. The Buccaneers were 0-4, Baker Mayfield was injured, and undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels was making just his second NFL start.

Then Bucky Irving took over.

He carried the ball 21 times for 165 yards, scored a rushing touchdown and caught another.

The Buccaneers won 24-16.

A 20% outcome is supposed to happen occasionally. The upset doesn’t prove the market was irrational.

But it does demonstrate how much uncertainty can be hiding inside a price that looks decisive.

At this point the market is no longer asking whether Jeremiah Smith can win the Heisman. It is asking who can catch him.

The case against buying at 48% is obvious. There is a lot of football left. A wide receiver also depends on someone else getting him the ball, and one quiet Saturday can change an awards race quickly.

But Smith has the thing that matters most in awards voting right now: momentum.

Every week seems to produce another moment that reinforces the same story.

He is the best player on one of the biggest brands in college football, putting up the kind of numbers that are becoming increasingly difficult to dismiss.

At 48%, it is no longer cheap.

Jeremiah Smith isn’t the only Ohio State market moving.

The Buckeyes are now sitting around 45% to win the Big Ten, more than twice the probability of their closest competition.

This is where Smith’s rise becomes more interesting than an individual awards story.

If Ohio State’s offense continues to evolve around him, the market may still be underpricing the gap between the Buckeyes and the rest of the conference.

The Iowa game was exactly the kind of road test that should make traders more comfortable buying Ohio State rather than fading it.

2. KANSAS CITY TO WIN THE SUPER BOWL

Trade the NFL Championship market on Kalshi

Death. Taxes. The Chiefs hanging around.

Kansas City remains unbeaten, yet the championship market still gives the Chiefs only about a 9% chance of winning another Super Bowl.

That makes them one of the more interesting teams on the board.

Nine percent isn’t cheap in a 32-team league. But Kansas City has spent years teaching everyone the same lesson: the regular season is largely about getting Patrick Mahomes into January with a viable roster.

The question isn’t whether the Chiefs are good.

It’s how long the market can keep them below double digits if they keep winning.

For now, we’re not chasing it.

3. MILWAUKEE TO WIN THE WORLD SERIES

Trade Milwaukee’s World Series market on Kalshi

October has a way of turning six months of baseball into six innings.

Milwaukee currently sits at roughly 25% to win the World Series, up about seven points over the past week.

The Dodgers remain slightly ahead, but the gap between the two has become remarkably small.

That matters because reputation tends to travel farther than recent performance in October. Los Angeles remains the team everyone recognizes. Milwaukee increasingly looks like the team the market actually respects.

The Brewers don’t need to become America’s team.

They just need to keep surviving.

The Pope has entered the chat. Pope Leo XIV, Chicago-born, lifelong White Sox fan, sent a handwritten letter to owner Jerry Reinsdorf before the Wild Card Series, invoking “the Almighty’s abundant blessings” on a team that lost at least 101 games in three straight seasons, including a modern-era record 121 losses in 2024. The White Sox responded by sweeping the Astros in two games. Manager Will Venable, when asked about having the Vatican in his corner, said it “means a lot.” The Pope himself, asked if he deserved credit for the turnaround, played it coy: “No comment.” A man whose entire job is being the most powerful spiritual authority on earth would not take a victory lap over a .519 baseball team, which somehow makes it funnier. He attended the 2005 World Series opener as plain old Father Bob and watched the White Sox win it all. Twenty-one years later he’s got the hat, the hotline to the Almighty, and apparently the format down cold, because the letter worked exactly once and now Chicago draws Cleveland, favored at -156 heading into Saturday’s Game 1. We will find out this weekend whether the blessing has range.

But the actual most entertaining person in professional sports right now isn’t wearing a collar. It’s the White Sox’s own Munetaka Murakami, a $34 million free agent signing from Japan who spent eight seasons as the home run king of Nippon Professional Baseball and has spent his first MLB October doing postgame interviews that belong in a museum. After clinching a playoff spot in September, a reporter asked him to rate how he felt on a scale of 1 to 10. He grabbed the microphone and screamed “No 10!” into it. After the Wild Card sweep, soaked in champagne, asked how many bottles he’d opened, he shouted “100!” Then, asked what it meant to celebrate with his team, Murakami looked directly into the camera and roared, at full volume, “I’m Japanese!” It did not answer the question. It has never once needed to. A man who typically works through a translator found the one register that requires no translation at all, and it is pure, uncut joy. The Pope picked a team. Murakami is just having the best month of his life on television, live, every single night. To the board.

TRADE 1: White Sox vs. Guardians, ALDS

Cleveland opens as the favorite at -156 on the moneyline, -1.5 on the run line, with Game 1 Saturday in Cleveland. The Guardians have been here before, 14 division titles in franchise history, most recently last year. The White Sox have been here only in the sense that they technically qualified. But the way they got here matters. Chicago is the first team in major league history to make the playoffs immediately after three straight 100-loss seasons, and they just beat a 95-win Astros team twice in a row to prove the Wild Card wasn’t a fluke. Add the Pope’s letter and Murakami’s postgame routine to the file and you have either the best feel-good story in the sport or the most overpriced underdog on the board, possibly both at once.

TRADE 2: World Series Champion 2026

The Dodgers sit at roughly 30 to 31% on both Kalshi and Polymarket, the clear favorite chasing a third straight title, something no National League team has ever done. Milwaukee is next at 16.5 to 17%, owners of a franchise-record 103 wins and still priced as the clear second choice rather than a co-favorite, which tells you how much the market still trusts a rotation fronted by Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Tarik Skubal, Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow over a better regular-season record. The White Sox sit at 2.3%, tied for last among the twelve teams in the field. The Pope’s letter and a screaming rookie got them a playoff series win. The market isn’t ready to credit either one for a parade.

TRADE 3: Patriots vs. Bills

Sunday at Highmark Stadium, 1 p.m. ET, and Buffalo can take a commanding three-game lead in the AFC East with a win over the division rival they’ve already beaten three straight times. Kalshi has the Bills at 73% on the moneyline, favored by 6.5. Buffalo is 3-0, averaging over 400 yards a game, second in the NFL in total EPA, and Josh Allen remains the overwhelming MVP favorite despite nursing a knee issue that had his coach fielding questions about it all week. New England counters at 1-2 with Drake Maye, who’s been turnover-prone early, trying to avoid what the beat writers are already calling a trap game dressed up as a rivalry game. Allen was limping after Buffalo’s Week 3 win over the Chargers, Joe Brady says he’s “not concerned,” and the Bills opened as 7-point favorites before settling to 6.5. A healthy Allen in a game like this is the MVP race taking care of itself in real time. An unhealthy one is the first real scare the favorite has had all season.

That’s the bell. The Pope got one series out of a letter, Murakami is turning press conferences into performance art, and the Dodgers are old, banged up and still the team to beat. Have a great weekend. Baseball in October doesn’t need the help, but it’ll take all the help it can get.

The MLB postseason field wasn’t settled until the final afternoon of the regular season yesterday. The Phillies won Game 162 to take the last National League wild card and eliminate Arizona. The Astros clinched the AL West when Texas lost to Minnesota, which makes Houston a division champion at 81-81 and, per CBS Sports, the first division winner in a 162-game season without a winning record. The Rays (98-64) held off the Yankees for the top seed in the American League, and Cleveland (85-77) took the AL Central and the other bye. In the National League, Milwaukee’s 103-59 record earned the No. 1 seed. Los Angeles (100-62) is No. 2 and chasing baseball’s first three-peat since the 2000 to 2002 Yankees.

The wild card round starts tomorrow, and the marquee series is Red Sox at Yankees, best of three, first pitch at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock. Boston was 14 games under .500 in late June and was priced around 100-to-1 to win the World Series in early July. They now get to knock out the Yankees in the Bronx and sit at roughly 14-1 to 16-1 depending on the book. The other series are White Sox at Astros, Phillies at Braves and Cubs at Padres. The White Sox got in after three straight 100-loss seasons, and the Padres closed with a 43-23 second-half run. The World Series market is still a Dodgers market, at +200 to +230 at most sportsbooks, with the Brewers around +500 to +600 and the Rays at +750.

TRADE 1: 2027 NFL Champion

Late last week Kalshi had Buffalo at 13 cents and the Rams at 12. Then the Rams led Denver 16-0 at halftime and lost 30-26 on Sunday night after Bo Nix engineered a 30-point second-half comeback. Matthew Stafford threw for 403 yards and two touchdowns but also a 66-yard pick-six that gave Denver the lead, and Los Angeles is now 1-2. Myles Garrett has been on injured reserve since September 17 after arthroscopic knee surgery, and Puka Nacua has a hip issue. Both are reportedly back soon. Sportsbooks haven’t reacted much. DraftKings still has the Rams at +650 this morning and the Bills at +700.

Buffalo is 3-0 after beating the Chargers 24-16, Josh Allen is the MVP favorite, and the Bills cost about the same as a team that just blew a 16-point lead. Baltimore (+900) is back to 2-1 after beating Dallas 34-31 in Rio. Our pick: Buffalo.

TRADE 2: NCAA Football: 2027 National Champion

Georgia now leads Polymarket at 16%. Ohio State is at 14%, Notre Dame and Texas at 13%, Miami at 10%, Indiana at 8% and LSU at 6%. Georgia earned the top spot by beating Oklahoma 41-13 with a 21-point second quarter, a week after a 45-17 win at Arkansas. Texas slipped even in a win, needing a 20-17 finish at Tennessee. Ohio State beat Illinois 42-19 but still carries its loss to Texas. Notre Dame beat Purdue 49-10. Indiana, a 21-point favorite Friday night, beat Northwestern only 29-23.

The biggest drop belonged to Ole Miss. The Rebels were ranked No. 4 and lost 52-28 at Florida with running back Kewan Lacy out, and they now trade around 2%. Florida sits at about 3%. Oregon (5%) has a quarterback question after Dante Moore left the USC game following a collision and Dylan Raiola finished a 41-27 win. Our pick: Georgia. If you want a price instead of a favorite, Ohio State at 14% has the best path, since a one-loss Big Ten team with Julian Sayin and Jeremiah Smith still has room in a 12-team field.

Both teams enter off a loss, LSU falling 32-24 at Ole Miss in Lane Kiffin’s disastrous return to Oxford, Texas A&M dropping a 31-21 decision to Kentucky, and neither program can afford a second straight slip without real Playoff-bubble consequences. LSU is favored by 8.5 at home, with a moneyline around -395 to the Aggies’ +310, and FPI gives the Tigers a 63% chance to win by roughly 4.5 points. The number worth watching sits one door down. The Vikings ground out a 9-3 defensive slog over the Bears, who lost Caleb Williams to a hamstring injury in the process. Cleveland pulled off a real upset, beating Tampa Bay 23-19 as eight-point underdogs. And Houston fell to 0-2 after a 20-6 loss to Cincinnati, prompting head coach DeMeco Ryans to publicly challenge his own locker room: if you call yourselves playmakers, where are the plays. The one game still left on the board closes out the week tonight, and it happens to be the one we flagged last Friday. To the board.

TRADE 1: New York Giants vs. Los Angeles Rams

Monday Night Football at SoFi Stadium is the last game of the week, and it is the same matchup we flagged as undervalued risk for the Rams on Friday. Kalshi still has the Rams as heavy favorites, with Giants contracts trading in the mid-20-cent range, essentially unchanged from where they sat before the weekend even started. That is worth noting on its own: a full slate of games came and went, and the market barely moved this line, which means tonight is genuinely the first real data point anyone gets on how much losing Myles Garrett for the year actually costs Los Angeles. Jaxson Dart and the Giants showed real signs of life beating Dallas in Week 1. Tonight tells you whether that was a fluke or a floor.

TRADE 2: College Football Playoff Championship

Ohio State remains the favorite, but Saturday night moved real money toward Ole Miss, and it is easy to see why. A team that started the season with a first-year coach replacing a guy who left in disgrace just beat a top-10 rival by outplaying them in the fourth quarter of the most emotionally loaded game of the year. Allen now has nine total touchdowns without a single turnover through two games. Only two other players in the Super Bowl era have opened a season that way: Patrick Mahomes in 2018 and Peyton Manning in 2013. Both won MVP. He is also the first player in NFL history with five-plus passing touchdowns and four-plus rushing touchdowns in his first two games, period. Lamar Jackson sits a distant second, with Joe Burrow, Brock Purdy, and Patrick Mahomes bunched behind him. Caleb Williams briefly rocketed into the conversation after a huge Week 1 in Chicago, then dropped off the board entirely with a hamstring injury, which tells you how quickly this race can turn. Two weeks does not make a season. But history says nobody has ever started like this and finished outside the conversation.

Let’s talk about what Lane Kiffin actually did, because “left for a rival” undersells it. Ole Miss went 11-1 last season and clinched its first College Football Playoff berth in school history. TRADE 1: LSU vs. Ole Miss

This is the game the entire offseason built toward. Lane Kiffin left Ole Miss for LSU in the winter, and Saturday he walks back into Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford to face the program he just left, with College GameDay in town and the Magnolia Bowl rivalry trophy on the line. Both teams are unbeaten, No. 7 LSU and No. 8 Ole Miss, and Kalshi has it about as close as these things get: LSU at 55 cents, Ole Miss at 47. LSU brings the better résumé so far, No. 1 in the country in total defense and No. 3 in total offense, with 12 sacks through two games and a run defense that has allowed just 36 yards on the ground all season. But nobody in the country knows this Ole Miss roster better than the man who built most of it. Kiffin recruited Trinidad Chambliss and a good chunk of the players lining up across from him Saturday night. This is a résumé game and a psychology game wrapped into one, and the market genuinely cannot decide which one wins.

TRADE 2: New York Giants vs. Los Angeles Rams

Monday Night Football at SoFi Stadium carries more weight than a Week 3 game usually does. The Rams opened the season as the betting world’s Super Bowl favorite, then lost their opener to the 49ers in Melbourne and lost Myles Garrett, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year they traded for this offseason, to a season-ending knee surgery. That is about as bad a six-day stretch as a “favorite” can have. And yet Kalshi still has the Rams as heavy favorites, with Giants contracts trading around 24 cents, meaning the market has barely blinked despite the roster taking a real hit. The Giants, for their part, are not the pushover this line implies. They upset Dallas in Week 1, and quarterback Jaxson Dart, who we flagged as an MVP value name last week, called this game exactly what it is: “a great test for our team.” A depleted favorite at home against a team that just won the game nobody expected them to win. This line should be more nervous than it looks.

TRADE 3: Pro Baseball Champion 2026

The World Series market has a genuine pricing puzzle sitting at the top of it. The Los Angeles Dodgers are the clear favorite on Kalshi at roughly 32 to 33 cents, more than double the field’s second choice. That second choice is Milwaukee, sitting around 11 to 12 cents, despite the Brewers owning the best run differential in baseball and a record that has run neck and neck with LA’s all season. Two teams separated by almost nothing in the standings are separated by nearly three times the price on the board. That gap is pure pedigree. The Dodgers have won it two years running and the market keeps paying up for the crown, while Milwaukee keeps quietly outplaying them on a per-game basis without ever getting credited for it. The playoffs settle this the only way they can: on the field, not the futures board. Until then, the Brewers remain the best team nobody is willing to bet on.

But a coach with a proven track record of developing exactly this kind of dual-threat passer, on a roster getting Malik Nabers back healthy, is precisely the kind of longshot story that looks obvious in hindsight come December. This is the buy-low name on the board.

TRADE 2: EPL Golden Boot

Erling Haaland is priced as high as 69% to win his fourth Golden Boot, and the market has good reason to believe it. He has averaged 28 goals a season over the last four years and just claimed the award again last season with 27, well clear of the field. The Athletic’s own power rankings have him first among every player in the league, and no other striker realistically threatens that gap. Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres are the named chasers, both sitting in the mid-teens as distant longshots. This is the least suspenseful market in English football right now, which is itself the story: Haaland has turned a genuinely competitive individual race into a formality almost every year he plays, and the market has simply stopped pretending otherwise.

TRADE 3: Heisman Trophy Winner

It only took one game to reshuffle this entire board. Miami’s Darian Mensah threw for 401 yards and five touchdowns in a Week 1 win over Stanford, and his odds doubled overnight from 8% to roughly 15-16%, vaulting him into the outright favorite’s chair. That is the fastest a Heisman market has moved this early in a season in years. Behind him, Arch Manning and CJ Carr round out the top three, but the field is genuinely wide open beyond that, with more than 30 other names still splitting the remaining probability. Mensah gets to bank another easy week too: Miami hosts Florida A&M as a 53.5-point favorite, which should let him hold the top spot for at least another seven days. Baker Mayfield and Joe Burrow, two former number-one overall picks and Heisman winners, meet in Cincinnati on Sunday, and the market has a clear lean here despite the personal history favoring Tampa Bay. Kalshi gives the Bengals a 65% win probability, even though Mayfield holds a 3-1 head-to-head edge over Burrow across four career meetings. That gap between the market and the individual matchup history is the story. Cincinnati is chasing a fourth straight win over Tampa Bay as a franchise, and the crowd is backing the trend over the quarterback matchup, betting that a full Bengals roster beats a strong individual storyline. When a market disagrees this clearly with a head-to-head narrative, it usually means the roster talent gap is bigger than the box score rivalry suggests.

The big boys come to play tomorrow night, which will make it the third time in modern NFL history the league has kicked off on a Wednesday, and it took a rematch too good to wait for Thursday to get there. Club football is back. The ultramarathon that runs from a Saturday in August to a Sunday in May and asks nothing of you but total devotion. And Italy leads it off, which feels right, because nobody in the world does the theater of a football weekend quite like Serie A.

Let’s be honest about where Italian soccer actually sits. Spain kicks off first among the big five, and it is a genuine two-team fight for once. Barcelona sit at 54% to complete a three-peat, with Real Madrid the only club priced as a real threat behind them. But look at what changed in Madrid this summer and not in Barcelona. Real fired Xabi Alonso mid-season, ran an interim manager through the spring, and then reached back 13 years to bring in José Mourinho, a manager who wins by building a defensive fortress first and figuring out the goals later. Barcelona, by contrast, barely touched a winning formula, keeping Hansi Flick and a young core led by Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres that produced 95 goals last season. That is the whole trade: the champions changed nothing, the challenger changed everything, and the market has that worth roughly 54 cents on the dollar. Arsenal are the reigning champions and the only club at the top without a fresh question mark, having finally ended their title drought last season. City are entering their first full season without Pep Guardiola on the touchline, and Liverpool, United, and Chelsea are all mid-rebuild under newer managers. That gap between Arsenal’s 37% and everyone else is the trade. Continuity is the most underpriced asset in football, and Arsenal are the only side at the top who kept theirs intact. If City’s new system clicks fast, that 9-point gap closes in a hurry. Until it does, the market is betting the team that already knows itself beats four teams still learning who they are.

Somewhere out there is a Michael Burry type staring at a spreadsheet, doing the math on the Los Angeles Lakers, and quietly losing his mind. This week Mark Walter agreed to sell the Lakers to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger for a record $12.5 billion, the most anyone has ever paid for an American sports team. Here is the detail that turns a sports story into a finance horror movie: Walter bought the Lakers 14 months ago for $10 billion. He is flipping them for a $2.5 billion profit before he has finished unpacking. That is not owning a basketball team. That is a real estate flip on a franchise, and it happened faster than most people repaint a kitchen.

If you have seen The Big Short, you know the shape of this. A number gets so detached from the thing underneath it that a few people start asking the only sane question, which is: what is this actually worth? The Lakers generate a few hundred million a year in revenue and just sold for twelve and a half billion, a multiple that would get laughed out of any other boardroom on earth. Shohei Ohtani deferred $680 million of his $700 million deal, and the Dodgers owe roughly a billion in deferred money to Ohtani, Betts, and Freeman that does not come due until the 2040s. Here is where it knots together. The Los Angeles Times reported that most of the money Walter used to buy the Dodgers, more than a billion dollars, came from insurance companies he controls through Guggenheim. Two of those insurers, Delaware Life and Clear Spring, are now under federal grand jury subpoena, part of an SEC and DOJ probe, sparked by a whistleblower, into how Guggenheim disclosed billions in loans. To be clear, the Dodgers’ deferrals are legal under the league’s rules, and Walter has not been charged with anything. But you can see the shape people are squinting at: trophy assets bought with insurance money, enormous obligations pushed decades into the future, and federal investigators now pulling the thread. It seems the whole empire runs on the same balance sheet, and the man at the top just chose this exact moment to sell his shiniest asset at the highest price in history and raise a pile of cash.

The difference between the housing bubble and the sports bubble is the punchline: you cannot short a basketball team. There is no put option on the Lakers, no credit default swap on the Knicks, no way to bet against a franchise valuation no matter how insane it gets. The bubble is un-shortable, which is exactly why it never pops. When the only buyers are billionaires collecting toys and the only exit is selling to a bigger billionaire, the number just goes up forever, powered by ego, which has never once been margin-called. So we cannot short the Lakers. But we can look at what $12.5 billion actually buys. To the board.

The Lakers, freshly valued at $12.5 billion, are priced around 28-to-1 to actually win the 2027 title, a roughly 3 to 4% chance that leaves them outside the league’s entire top tier. Read that gap again. Kushner and Iger paid a world-record sum for a team the market gives a 1-in-30 shot at a trophy. That is the whole Big Short thesis in one line: price and value have completely uncoupled. You are not buying a contender, you are buying a logo, a city, a Luka Dončić highlight reel, and the right to sit courtside while the Oklahoma City Thunder win the actual games. The roster is fine. The number on the franchise is science fiction. If the Lakers were a stock, the valuation would imply a dynasty. The betting market implies a second-round exit. It is a genuinely great baseball team. It is also the clearest picture of the whole Big Short thesis in cleats: win now, pay later, and let future-you sort out the bill. The Lakers were the trophy Walter sold at the top. The Dodgers are the one still generating championships on borrowed time, literally, with the deferred money coming due long after the banners are hung. The market says 37%, best in baseball. The question the open raises is who exactly is holding the paper when those deferrals finally land, and whether the same insurance companies now under subpoena are anywhere near the answer.

TRADE 3: Nothing Ever Happens: 2026

And here is the market that ties the whole thing together, the closest thing Polymarket has to the calm before Carell starts screaming. “Nothing Ever Happens: 2026” prices an 81% chance that this year ends without a single paradigm-shifting global event, no crash, no war escalation, no collapse, nothing. Eighty-one percent says the good times roll on undisturbed. That is the exact sentiment that priced every bubble in history right up until the morning it did not. The crowd is overwhelmingly confident that nothing breaks, while the smartest money in sports quietly sells its trophy asset to a bigger fool and raises cash ahead of a federal probe. In The Big Short, the whole system was 81% sure nothing would happen too. The market is almost always right that nothing happens, which is what makes the rare morning it is wrong so expensive. Buy the calm if you believe it. Just know you are on the same side of the trade as everyone who has ever said the number only goes up.

When we started this newsletter a couple of months ago, prediction markets were still a curiosity, a place where people bet on whether Trump would say “McDonald’s.” Ten weeks later they are a $50-billion-a-month industry bigger than the sportsbook establishment, and the rocket fuel was the World Cup. The numbers are not subtle. In May, Kalshi did $17.9 billion in volume. In July it did $37.7 billion, part of a record $50.6 billion month across the major platforms. The category has been running at nearly ten times where it sat early in the year. And the driver is not politics or crypto, it is sports, which now makes up around 85% of Kalshi’s activity. The clearest stat of the whole boom: during the World Cup, prediction markets swelled to 27% of all legal US sports betting, up from 9% at the start of the year. The tournament pulled in $20 billion in on-chain volume and nearly 400,000 first-time wallets. That was the catalyst. Now the machine needs its next fix, and the fall calendar is loaded. European soccer is back, and basketball and hockey are on deck. Four leagues, four championship futures, one very hungry order book. To the board.

Europe’s biggest prize has the flattest board in the sport. This is a duopoly built on two young superstars, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for the Thunder and Victor Wembanyama for the Spurs, and the crowd is betting the league belongs to them for the next decade. Behind them it gets loud: the Philadelphia 76ers surged to 12% after signing LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, the defending champion Knicks sit at 9%, and Miami is at 5% after landing Giannis. But here is the number that should make any favorite nervous. The NBA has had eight different champions in eight seasons. There is no dynasty, only turnover, and a market this confident in two teams is a market begging to be wrong. The Thunder and Spurs are the pick. History says take the field.

TRADE 4: Stanley Cup 2027 Winner

Hockey is the wildest board of the four. The Florida Panthers lead at just 13%, with the Colorado Avalanche and defending champion Carolina Hurricanes tied at 10%, and then the Edmonton Oilers and Vegas Golden Knights at 8% apiece, in a field where even the 20th-ranked team has a real pulse. That is the market telling you the truth about the sport: the Stanley Cup is widely considered the hardest trophy to win in all of pro sports, and no amount of offseason maneuvering changes that. Florida gets the top line after adding Brady Tkachuk alongside brother Matthew, and Carolina is defending its crown despite losing goaltender Frederik Andersen in free agency. But the story worth watching is Edmonton at 8%. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are the two best players on the planet, neither has ever won a Cup, and the Oilers enter the season having shaken up their bench with the pressure mounting by the year. The season opens September 29. This is the trade for people who understand that in hockey the favorite is a suggestion and the puck is a rumor. A 13% frontrunner is not a pick. It is the market admitting anyone can win, which in this sport is usually correct.

There is no team in Boston Red Sox history that has won more games in a row than this one. On June 25 the Sox were 32-46, owner of the worst record in the American League and the franchise’s worst mark through 78 games since 1966. The manager had already been fired. The ace had not pitched since April and young stars were on IR. It was, by every available measure, a dead season. Then they ripped off 15 straight, tied a franchise record set in 1946, and turned a last-place roster into the hottest team in the sport. FanGraphs moved their playoff odds from 13% to 65% before the streak even finished to 88% today. That is not a slow climb. That is a franchise coming back from the dead in real time, and the order book caught every heartbeat of it.

Which is the whole point of this newsletter in one team. Prediction markets do not care about your April narrative, your preseason ranking, or what the experts wrote in March. TRADE 1: Boston Red Sox to Make the Playoffs

Here is what a real repricing looks like, and it happened while the sport was supposed to be boring. On June 24 the Red Sox were buried, and FanGraphs gave them a 13% chance to make the playoffs, a number reserved for teams whose fans have mentally moved on to football. Then Boston went on a 20-3 tear, including that 15-game winning streak, swept the AL East-leading Rays, took down the defending champion Dodgers, and climbed into the third wild card spot. Their postseason odds rocketed toward 65%, their sportsbook playoff line swung all the way to -700, and a team that lived in last place for three months became a live World Series entrant. Then the front office confirmed it believed the run, buying at the deadline instead of selling and landing three-time All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman from Baltimore. This is the single best illustration on the board of why the market beats the preseason take. Nobody had this in April. The market did not need them to. It repriced a dead team to a contender in six weeks, because the only thing an order book respects is what is actually happening, and what is actually happening at Fenway is the best story in baseball. They now stand 88% to make the postseason.

TRADE 2: Ballon d’Or Winner 2026

The award for the best footballer alive gets handed out October 26 in London, and the market has a favorite the history of the award should make nervous. Harry Kane led recent trading around 58%, with Lamine Yamal second near 21%, on the strength of a genuinely absurd 73-goal season for Bayern Munich. Here is the problem with that number: it was priced before Spain won the World Cup. The Ballon d’Or has almost never gone to the guy with the prettiest stat line and the emptiest trophy case, and Kane, for all his goals, just watched his England side lose in the semifinal while two of his direct rivals, Yamal and Rodri, lifted the actual World Cup. Mbappé said it best after France lost the final, that he would have traded the top-scorer record for the winner’s medal, because the voters always weigh the medal heavier. So the real trade is the repricing. Kane at 58% is the market rewarding goals. The award is voted by journalists who reward silverware. Yamal is 18, just won the biggest trophy on earth, and put up 42 goals and assists for a title-winning Barcelona. When those two ideas collide over the next ten weeks, the number that looks stale is the one on top.

TRADE 3: What Will Gold Hit by End of December?

While everyone was watching crypto bet against itself, the oldest trade on earth quietly went parabolic. Gold is sitting near $4,330 an ounce after touching above $5,500 earlier this year, which is why the market treats $4,500 by December as a done deal at 99%. That is not the interesting line. The interesting line is what sits right above it: the crowd gives gold a 43% chance to hit $5,000 by year-end, and still assigns real money to $6,000, $7,000, even $8,000. Think about what that means. A metal that does nothing, produces nothing, and pays no interest is being priced for another 15% leg up after already running to record highs, in a year the Fed has held rates high and is hinting at hikes, which is supposed to be the exact environment that kills gold. It has not killed gold. It has done the opposite, because the buyers are not chasing yield, they are fleeing everything else. Central banks are hoovering up 800 tonnes a year and the de-dollarization trade is real. Stocks are near records, crypto traders are shorting their own coin, and the smart, scared money keeps buying the one asset no government can print and no exchange can hack. The $4,500 line is settled. The 43% on $5,000 is the actual fear gauge, and it is reading high.
