When we started this newsletter a couple of months ago, prediction markets were still a curiosity, a place where people bet on whether Trump would say “McDonald’s.” Ten weeks later they are a $50-billion-a-month industry bigger than the sportsbook establishment, and the rocket fuel was the World Cup. The numbers are not subtle. In May, Kalshi did $17.9 billion in volume. In July it did $37.7 billion, part of a record $50.6 billion month across the major platforms. The category has been running at nearly ten times where it sat early in the year. And the driver is not politics or crypto, it is sports, which now makes up around 85% of Kalshi’s activity. The clearest stat of the whole boom: during the World Cup, prediction markets swelled to 27% of all legal US sports betting, up from 9% at the start of the year. The tournament pulled in $20 billion in on-chain volume and nearly 400,000 first-time wallets. That was the catalyst. Now the machine needs its next fix, and the fall calendar is loaded. European soccer is back, and basketball and hockey are on deck. Four leagues, four championship futures, one very hungry order book. To the board.

TRADE 1: UEFA Champions League 2026-27 Winner

Europe’s biggest prize has the flattest board in the sport. PSG, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich are tied at the top at 14% each, with Manchester City at 13% and Barcelona at 12%, which is the market’s way of saying it has no idea. PSG are the story anyway. England's title race opens August 21 as a two-team market with a long tail. Arsenal lead at 37%, Manchester City sit second at 28%, and then the board falls off a cliff: Liverpool at 13%, Manchester United at 12%, and Chelsea at 10%, with nearly $5 million already traded. Arsenal are the reigning champions and the crowd's clear pick, the one contender at the top without a fresh question to answer. Everyone chasing them has one. TRADE 3: NBA 2027 Champion

Now the look ahead to fall. The NBA tips off in October and the market has already crowned a two-team era. The Oklahoma City Thunder lead at 22% with the San Antonio Spurs right behind at 21%, and the gap to everyone else tells the story. This is a duopoly built on two young superstars, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for the Thunder and Victor Wembanyama for the Spurs, and the crowd is betting the league belongs to them for the next decade. Behind them it gets loud: the Philadelphia 76ers surged to 12% after signing LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, the defending champion Knicks sit at 9%, and Miami is at 5% after landing Giannis. But here is the number that should make any favorite nervous. The NBA has had eight different champions in eight seasons. There is no dynasty, only turnover, and a market this confident in two teams is a market begging to be wrong. The Thunder and Spurs are the pick. History says take the field.

TRADE 4: Stanley Cup 2027 Winner

Hockey is the wildest board of the four. The Florida Panthers lead at just 13%, with the Colorado Avalanche and defending champion Carolina Hurricanes tied at 10%, and then the Edmonton Oilers and Vegas Golden Knights at 8% apiece, in a field where even the 20th-ranked team has a real pulse. That is the market telling you the truth about the sport: the Stanley Cup is widely considered the hardest trophy to win in all of pro sports, and no amount of offseason maneuvering changes that. Florida gets the top line after adding Brady Tkachuk alongside brother Matthew, and Carolina is defending its crown despite losing goaltender Frederik Andersen in free agency. But the story worth watching is Edmonton at 8%. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are the two best players on the planet, neither has ever won a Cup, and the Oilers enter the season having shaken up their bench with the pressure mounting by the year. The season opens September 29. This is the trade for people who understand that in hockey the favorite is a suggestion and the puck is a rumor. A 13% frontrunner is not a pick. It is the market admitting anyone can win, which in this sport is usually correct.

There is no team in Boston Red Sox history that has won more games in a row than this one. On June 25 the Sox were 32-46, owner of the worst record in the American League and the franchise’s worst mark through 78 games since 1966. The manager had already been fired. The ace had not pitched since April and young stars were on IR. It was, by every available measure, a dead season. Then they ripped off 15 straight, tied a franchise record set in 1946, and turned a last-place roster into the hottest team in the sport. FanGraphs moved their playoff odds from 13% to 65% before the streak even finished to 88% today. That is not a slow climb. That is a franchise coming back from the dead in real time, and the order book caught every heartbeat of it.

Their postseason odds rocketed toward 65%, their sportsbook playoff line swung all the way to -700, and a team that lived in last place for three months became a live World Series entrant. Then the front office confirmed it believed the run, buying at the deadline instead of selling and landing three-time All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman from Baltimore. This is the single best illustration on the board of why the market beats the preseason take. Nobody had this in April. The market did not need them to. It repriced a dead team to a contender in six weeks, because the only thing an order book respects is what is actually happening, and what is actually happening at Fenway is the best story in baseball. They now stand 88% to make the postseason.

TRADE 2: Ballon d’Or Winner 2026

The award for the best footballer alive gets handed out October 26 in London, and the market has a favorite the history of the award should make nervous. Harry Kane led recent trading around 58%, with Lamine Yamal second near 21%, on the strength of a genuinely absurd 73-goal season for Bayern Munich. Here is the problem with that number: it was priced before Spain won the World Cup. The Ballon d’Or has almost never gone to the guy with the prettiest stat line and the emptiest trophy case, and Kane, for all his goals, just watched his England side lose in the semifinal while two of his direct rivals, Yamal and Rodri, lifted the actual World Cup. Mbappé said it best after France lost the final, that he would have traded the top-scorer record for the winner’s medal, because the voters always weigh the medal heavier. So the real trade is the repricing. Kane at 58% is the market rewarding goals. The award is voted by journalists who reward silverware. Yamal is 18, just won the biggest trophy on earth, and put up 42 goals and assists for a title-winning Barcelona. When those two ideas collide over the next ten weeks, the number that looks stale is the one on top.

TRADE 3: What Will Gold Hit by End of December?

While everyone was watching crypto bet against itself, the oldest trade on earth quietly went parabolic. Gold is sitting near $4,330 an ounce after touching above $5,500 earlier this year, which is why the market treats $4,500 by December as a done deal at 99%. That is not the interesting line. The interesting line is what sits right above it: the crowd gives gold a 43% chance to hit $5,000 by year-end, and still assigns real money to $6,000, $7,000, even $8,000. Think about what that means. A metal that does nothing, produces nothing, and pays no interest is being priced for another 15% leg up after already running to record highs, in a year the Fed has held rates high and is hinting at hikes, which is supposed to be the exact environment that kills gold. It has not killed gold. It has done the opposite, because the buyers are not chasing yield, they are fleeing everything else. Central banks are hoovering up 800 tonnes a year and the de-dollarization trade is real. Stocks are near records, crypto traders are shorting their own coin, and the smart, scared money keeps buying the one asset no government can print and no exchange can hack. The $4,500 line is settled. The 43% on $5,000 is the actual fear gauge, and it is reading high.

The calendar flipped to August, which in this country means the long national nightmare of caring about baseball in July is over. Football is back. NFL preseason games start this week, college kicks off in under four weeks, and the futures boards are already the most interesting thing on the internet. So we are doing a season preview, and we are starting it where a friend of the show planted his flag. When Michael Yo came on a few weeks back, we handed him the college football segment and he did not blink: the Miami Hurricanes, all the way. It was a bold call then and it is a bolder one now, given how last season ended for the Canes. So let’s preview the year through Yo’s pick and see whether the market thinks he is a genius or a homer. To the board.

TRADE 1: 2026 College Football National Champion

he market says wide open and it is not exaggerating. Ohio State lead the board at just 14%, with Notre Dame and Oregon tied at 13%, Georgia at 12%, and Texas at 11%. Five programs inside three points, which is about as flat as a title race gets. And here is the detail that makes the Michael Yo pick interesting: Miami is not in that group. The Canes sit outside the market's entire top five, a notch below Texas, despite playing in the national championship game eight months ago. So Yo is not just backing a contender, he is backing a team the crowd has ranked sixth or worse in a year the crowd cannot separate the top five. That is either sharp or sentimental, and last season offers cover for the optimists. The team that won it all last year, Indiana, opened at 100-to-1, went 16-0, and made the entire preseason board look like a group project nobody studied for. TRADE 2: Miami to Make the College Football Playoff

Here is the Michael Yo believer’s trade, and the market likes it more than the title odds suggest. Miami sits around -300 to make the twelve-team Playoff, an implied chance near 75%, with the miss priced at +220. The context is what makes this one sting or sing depending on your faith. Last season the Canes pulled off the biggest upset in Playoff history, knocking off Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl, rode it all the way to the national championship game, and then ran into the Indiana buzzsaw and lost 27-21. One game from the whole thing. This year Mario Cristobal reloaded through the transfer portal, handed the keys to quarterback Darian Mensah, and returns a roster the market trusts to reach the bracket even if it does not trust it to win it. That is the gap Yo is betting against. The market says Miami is very likely to be in the room. Whether they finish the job is the 9% question from Trade 1. Getting invited to the party is not the same as leaving with the trophy, and last January the Canes learned exactly how far apart those two things are.

TRADE 3: NFL Champion 2027

The pro game returns this week too, and the Super Bowl board is open for a season that has not thrown a competitive snap. The Los Angeles Rams sit narrowly atop a bunched, flat field, and after them the market cannot separate a dozen teams worth a look. That flatness is the whole story of an August NFL market. The crowd knows preseason football is a glorified scrimmage, knows a third of the league’s starting quarterbacks will tweak something before Labor Day, and prices the entire thing with appropriate humility. The value in early August is never the name at the top. It is whichever roster the market has not bothered to examine, the team one training-camp story away from a repricing. Check this board in six weeks and it will be a different document. That is not the market being wrong. That is the market admitting nobody knows anything yet, which is the most honest thing in all of football right now.

This is the deadest week on the American sports calendar and it is not close. The NFL is running training camp, which means grown men are betting on who wins a padded practice in Wisconsin. Baseball is in its dog days, a weeknight blur of games nobody will remember, with the one jolt of the trade deadline still three days out. The NBA and NHL are dark. The World Cup packed up and left. The 1% is the market doing the one thing cable news will not, which is telling you, unemotionally and with real money on the line, that nothing is happening today. In a week with no games, a contract on a document that never arrives is somehow one of the more active things people are trading. That is not a market. That is a fidget spinner with a settlement date.

TRADE 2: Will Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet Get Engaged in 2026?

Nothing says dead sports week like a market on whether a movie star proposes to a Kardashian. The crowd puts Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet getting engaged this year at roughly 17%, and the chart is the funniest part. The odds peaked near 60% back in February, briefly spiked to 51% in late April, and have quietly bled out ever since, despite the couple only appearing more inseparable, courtside for the Knicks’ title run and reportedly half-living together. That is the market doing something almost poignant. It is a genuinely perfect artifact of the slow week: when there is no game to bet, the truly committed will manufacture a game out of a two-hour candlestick and stake the price of a large pizza on it. There is no edge here. There is no information. There is only a nation that needs something, anything, to resolve by dinner.

TRADE 4: What Will Be Said During the Next Episode of Big Brother?

With the actual sports gone, the market has moved on to transcribing a reality show in advance. Polymarket runs live contracts on what specific words will be spoken during upcoming Big Brother episodes, and the reality TV section is doing over $2.7 million in volume pricing lines like it. Read that again. There are people applying real capital, order books, and technical analysis to whether a houseguest says a particular phrase on a Thursday night. This is the market equivalent of betting on which word a stranger will use next, and it is one of the busiest corners of the platform this week. It is also, in its own bleak way, a perfect crowd-sourcing engine: the wisdom of the crowd, pointed with laser focus at a soundstage in Los Angeles, resolving on a sentence. When the leagues go dark, the degenerate mind does not power down. It just aims its entire analytical apparatus at a house full of strangers and asks what the over/under is on someone saying the word “loyalty.” That is the slow week in one contract. The centerpiece of the entire deadline is one arm. Tarik Skubal, the two-time reigning AL Cy Young winner, is the best pitcher in baseball and the biggest name on the block, sitting around a 60% chance to be dealt by the August 3 deadline. The Tigers dug themselves a hole, sit multiple teams back of the final wild card, and hold a rental they cannot re-sign, which is the exact recipe that forces a front office to trade a superstar at his peak rather than watch him walk for a draft pick. So the interesting market is not whether he moves, it is where. Kalshi runs a live “next team” contract, and the Dodgers are the favorite, a club motivated to three-peat, sitting on a farm system deep enough to pay the king’s ransom, and already reported to be assembling a prospect package. That is the trade the whole sport is watching: the best pitcher alive, a defending champion with the pieces to get him, and a selling team trying to squeeze out every ounce of value before the clock hits zero. Here is your cricket bet, and it is more American than it sounds. The Hundred is a competition the England and Wales Cricket Board invented from scratch, a 100-ball format that finishes in about two and a half hours, with city franchise teams, a countdown clock, music between overs, and a rulebook deliberately simplified for people who do not have a rulebook. It is cricket stripped down and speed-run for exactly the kind of newly curious fan the World Cup just minted, which is to say, you. The sixth season runs July 21 to August 16, and Trent Rockets enter as the men’s favorite at around 13-2, with Birmingham Phoenix leading the women’s side near 17-2. The genuinely funny part is the pattern. England gave the world Test cricket, a game that can last five days and still end in a draw, then looked at the modern attention span and built the opposite on purpose. It is the same instinct that put a halftime show in the World Cup final, running in reverse across the Atlantic. If you want the lowest-commitment entry point into a brand new sport with real money on it, this is the one. Nobody will know you only started watching last Tuesday.

Five days ago this country cared deeply about soccer. Fifty million Americans learned what a false nine was, screamed at a VAR replay, and could pick Lamine Yamal out of a lineup. Then Ferran Torres scored in the 106th minute, Rodri lifted the trophy, the confetti got swept up in New Jersey, and the entire nation woke up Monday with nothing to watch.

And the numbers say we were not faking it. Spain’s win over Argentina drew 62.8 million viewers in the US, with Fox averaging 38.9 million and Telemundo and Peacock adding another 23.9 million. Fox’s telecast peaked at 51.7 million, the most-watched soccer broadcast in American television history, and the match-only window averaged 42.5 million. Counted that way, the combined audience hits 66.4 million, which is the largest American television audience for anything other than an NFL game or a news event since the series finale of Seinfeld in 1998. Put differently: the only thing all year that pulled a bigger crowd was the Super Bowl. The Spanish-language side was its own record. Telemundo’s 23.9 million made it the most-watched soccer game in Spanish-language TV history in this country. This was not one lucky Sunday, either. Fox averaged 7.74 million across all 104 matches, up 116% from 2022, while Telemundo averaged 6.3 million, up 143%. Even the third-place game, a fixture nobody on the field wanted to play, pulled 13.1 million. A consolation match out-drew most of what the rest of American sports puts on television in a given week.

Spain are world champions. Ferran Torres came off the bench and buried it in the 106th minute in New Jersey, 1-0 in extra time, and Rodri lifted the trophy in front of 70,000 people in New Jersey. Argentina managed two shots all night, neither on target, and Messi sat on the turf afterward taking in what is almost certainly his last World Cup match. Spain conceded one goal in the entire tournament, the stingiest champion in the event’s history, and stretched their unbeaten run to 38. Emiliano Martínez made 11 saves, the most ever in a final, and still lost.

Now the part that matters for this country. America hosted the biggest World Cup ever built, 48 teams, 104 matches, and it worked. The Scots emptied Boston’s beer supply and then cleaned up after themselves. The Japanese tidied a stadium with their own trash bags. The Norwegians rowed up a subway escalator. Mexican street ducks became mascots. And the closing act was the first halftime show in World Cup history, featuring Madonna, Bieber, Shakira, BTS, and the Muppets, because of course the United States looked at the world’s most sacred sporting tradition and thought, this needs a bit. The soccer was not ours. The spectacle absolutely was.

So the world leaves, and America returns to…football. The other one. Camps open in a matter of days, and the futures boards are already open for business. To the board.

TRADE 1: NFL Champion 2027

The way-too-early Super Bowl LXI board is a study in parity. The Los Angeles Rams lead at 16.5%, and after that the field falls off a cliff into a pile of teams nobody can separate: Seattle and Buffalo at 7.5% each, Baltimore at 6.7%. That top number is doing a lot of work. A 16.5% favorite means the crowd thinks there is an 83.5% chance the champion is somebody else, which is the most honest thing anyone will say about the NFL between now and September. The Rams get the nod on roster depth, line stability, and draft capital, which is the analytical way of saying they have no obvious holes yet. Check back in six weeks when three starting quarterbacks are in walking boots. The value, as always in July, is not at the top. It is in whichever 4% team the market has not bothered to look at.

TRADE 2: NCAA Football: 2027 National Champion

Indiana are the defending champions, having beaten Miami 27-21 in Miami Gardens to finish a perfect season, which nobody saw coming given the Hoosiers opened the prior year at 100-to-1. The 2027 board has learned nothing from this. Notre Dame lead at 12%, Oregon and Ohio State at 11%, with Texas at 9%. The title game set for Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on January 25. Ohio State return the best quarterback-receiver pairing in the sport in Julian Sayin and Jeremiah Smith, which is the tidiest case on the board and also the one everybody already knows. The instructive number is the one from 18 months ago: a 100-to-1 team won it all, and the market has responded by putting all its money back on the blue bloods. College football’s entire lesson of the last two seasons is that the preseason board is a fiction. The board does not care.

TRADE 3: Champions League: The Post-World-Cup Star Watch

Here is the real dividend of hosting. Millions of Americans just spent a month learning names, and the Champions League returns in September to cash that in. Start with Lamine Yamal, the 18-year-old who bent the semifinal against France to his will and is now a world champion before he can legally rent a car in most states, playing his club football at Barcelona. Ferran Torres, the substitute who won the World Cup with one swing of his right foot, is at the same club. Jude Bellingham dragged England past Norway with a two-goal quarterfinal masterclass and goes back to Real Madrid. Kylian Mbappé finished with eight goals and no trophy and will spend a season taking it out on Europe. The market opportunity is the interesting part: American attention has historically evaporated the moment the World Cup ends, and prediction market volume on European club soccer has always been a fraction of what the tournament produced. If even a slice of the audience that just watched Yamal for a month follows him into September, that gap closes fast. The tournament is over. The order book is betting the habit sticks.

The Scoreboard

The market went 2-for-5 in a week where the board’s favorites got mugged in broad daylight. England were priced to reach the final and didn’t. France was favored to reach the final and didn’t. The Wimbledon women’s favorite lost, and the inflation market missed so low it didn’t even print a number close to right. The two teams left standing on Sunday, Spain and Argentina, are the exact two the market wrote off as underdogs in their own semifinals. When the safest thing on the board is Jannik Sinner holding serve, everyone else clearly forgot to.

The Calls

🔴 MISS — England to reach the final (Kalshi 54% YES) Kalshi had England at 54% to end a 60-year wait; Argentina won 2-1 in Atlanta and ended it for another four. Anthony Gordon pulled one back, and then Thomas Tuchel went negative, handed Lionel Messi the ball, and politely asked a five-time Ballon d’Or winner to stop having ideas. He did not stop. Sixty years and counting, priced at a coin flip and delivered at a funeral.

🟢 HIT — Argentina to beat Switzerland (Kalshi 75% YES) The one time the favorite actually did its job. Kalshi had the defending champs at 75% in the quarterfinal, and they cruised 3-1 against a ten-man Switzerland. No drama, no penalties, no gray hairs. If you took the chalk here, you got to watch the rest of the week’s carnage from a comfortable chair.

🟢 HIT — Sinner to win Wimbledon (Kalshi 83% YES) The steadiest bet of the fortnight. Sinner beat Alexander Zverev in four sets for back-to-back Wimbledon titles and a tenth straight win over the same man, which at this point is less a rivalry than a recurring calendar invite. Kalshi never had it below 83%. Boring bet, boring result, and everyone who backed it slept fine.

🔴 MISS — Muchova to win the Wimbledon women’s final (-134, ~57%) The books made Karolina Muchova a -134 favorite over fellow Czech Linda Noskova at +112. Noskova, the underdog, won 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, blew five championship points in the second set just to make everyone sweat, and then calmly closed it out for her first Grand Slam. The favorite’s price said, “comfortable.” The scoreboard said “first-time champion.”

🔴 MISS — June CPI to land at 3.8% or higher (Kalshi ~71% combined) Kalshi traders piled into a hot number: 3.8% was the favorite at 47%, and the market gave a combined ~71% to inflation coming in at 3.8% or above. It came in at 3.5% — below every single bucket the market bothered to price, all the way down past the 3.7% floor nobody thought it would touch. Gas prices came down, the whole board guessed high, and your grocery run got a rare piece of good news.

Biggest Whiff of the Week 🔴

France, the 41% favorite to beat Spain and a co-favorite to win the whole thing at ~17% all year long.

Polymarket made France the betting favorite in the semifinal, 41% to Spain’s 29%, and they responded with the single most expensive no-show of the tournament. Spain won 2-0 in a game France finished with an expected-goals total of 0.31 — a number so small it barely qualifies as an intention, never mind a threat. Kylian Mbappé spent the closing minutes at a gentle jog, the attack created nothing anyone would call a chance, and a team the market had backed as a genuine title contender since last summer went out without landing a punch. The board bet on French firepower for twelve months. When it finally mattered, France brought a water pistol.

Best Call of the Week 🟢

Spain is priced at just 29% to win their own semifinal.

Polymarket looked at Spain-France and made Spain the third most likely outcome, behind France and the draw. Then Spain went out and won 2-0, having now conceded exactly one goal in the entire tournament, and flipped straight to a 61% favorite for the final. The believers didn’t just fade the reigning European champions at 29 cents on the dollar; they backed a defense that has spent a month making the best attackers on earth look ordinary. Non-obvious going in, and looking obvious in hindsight, which is the whole game.

Sunday is the entire point of the last month. Three to weigh in on:

• Spain win the World Cup final? It’s tomorrow, July 19, and it is already the biggest single prediction market ever built: over $1.27 billion on the Spain-Argentina contract on Kalshi alone, part of a World Cup that has drawn $29 billion across the platforms and makes the Super Bowl’s betting handle look like pocket change. Spain sits at ~61% with the best defense in the tournament; Argentina has Messi and a title to defend. — yes or no, and why.

• The Pitt to win Best Drama at the Emmys? Nominations landed this week, and the HBO Max hospital show led everyone with 25, and Kalshi already has it at a suffocating 87% to take the top prize. Frontrunner this heavy usually means the only drama left is whether anything can trip it. — yes or no, and why.

• Will the Fed cut rates at all in 2026? Last week’s loop, flipped upside down. Two weeks ago, the fear was a hike; now, after soft jobs and a cool 3.5% CPI, Polymarket has the “zero cuts in 2026” outcome sitting near 79% — the market’s bet is that the Fed simply freezes and does nothing all year. Does this week’s soft print finally crack that? — yes or no, and why.

See you next week, from the other side of a final. The favorites got picked off one by one, France brought a squib to a knife fight, and the two teams the market benched are the two still standing. Vamos, or vámonos — someone’s booking a flight home tomorrow night.

The two paths could not have been more different. Spain arrives unbeaten in 37 straight matches, having conceded almost nothing all tournament, methodically taking apart Portugal, Belgium, and France without ever losing the thread. Argentina arrives the other way, on fumes and nerve, having escaped Switzerland in extra time and England on a Lautaro Martínez header in stoppage time, with Messi on eight goals and a nation chasing the first back-to-back title since Brazil in 1962.

Now the variable the broadcast will underplay: the thermostat. Spain did not just win its way to this final, it did so in air conditioning. La Roja opened the tournament in the covered, climate-controlled Atlanta stadium, played a quarterfinal against Belgium in a comfortable canopy-shaded 75 degrees, and settled the semifinal against France under the fully closed, air-conditioned roof in Dallas. They have barely broken a sweat that the building did not immediately wick away. Argentina took the hard road, in the sun. Their quarterfinal against Switzerland went the full 120 minutes in open-air Kansas City, with RealFeel temperatures near 91 at kickoff, a genuine extra-time grind in genuine heat. That sets up two opposite reads for Sunday. The fatigue read favors Spain: Argentina has more heat and more minutes stacked in older legs, and Messi turns 39 in this tournament. The adaptation read favors Argentina: the final is open-air at MetLife, forecast in the mid-80s with a chance of storms, a venue FIFPRO ranks among its three biggest heat risks of the entire event, and Spain has not played a single knockout match outside a climate-controlled bubble. The fortress has been kept in a cooler. Sunday, they take the roof off. To the markets.

TRADE 1: World Cup Winner

Spain is the favorite and the crowd is not shy about it. La Roja sit at 58% to lift the trophy, with Argentina at 42%, in the largest sports market Polymarket has ever run. The number rewards everything measurable: the clean sheets, the 37-game unbeaten run, the extra day of rest, the fresher legs. But the market may be pricing a team that has been protected from the one thing Sunday guarantees. Every knockout match Spain played was climate-controlled. Argentina has spent the tournament proving it can win at 120 minutes in Kansas City heat, and the final is an open-air furnace by comparison to anything Spain has felt since the group stage. The 58% says discipline and rest win a temperate game. The 42% is a bet that heat, humidity, and a 39-year-old who has done this in every condition on earth turn it into a different kind of test. The coddled favorite meets the weather for the first time when it matters most.

TRADE 2: World Cup Golden Boot Winner

The individual race is dead level and about to be decided in the most absurd way possible. Messi and Kylian Mbappé are tied at eight goals apiece, and Mbappé failed to score in France’s loss to Spain, freezing the gap. Here is the wrinkle. Mbappé’s tournament is not over, because France plays the third-place game on Saturday, meaning the Golden Boot could be settled in a consolation match nobody wanted to be in. The other chases the same prize in the game they hold to fill a Saturday afternoon.

TRADE 3: Third-Place Playoff: France vs. England

The saddest fixture in sports arrives Saturday in Miami. France, the number one ranked team on the planet, and England, ranked fourth, spent a month as trophy favorites and now meet in the game whose only reward is not finishing fourth. This is two of the tournament’s four best sides playing 90 minutes of applied disappointment, contested by players who would rather be resting for a final they did not reach. The market treats it as the coin flip it is, because motivation cannot be priced when neither side wants to be there. Everyone on that pitch is thinking about Sunday. None of them are in it.

The World Cup just did something it has never done. For the first time in the tournament’s modern history, the four best teams on the planet all made the semifinals. Sports now makes up about 85% of Kalshi’s lifetime volume, and on Polymarket, the platform built for politics, sports hit 56.5% of June volume and overtook both politics and crypto for the first time. Pew pegs sports at 80% of all Kalshi trading and 39% of Polymarket since mid-2024. Kalshi and Polymarket grabbed 78.5% of all betting-app downloads in June, up from a combined 6% a year earlier, while DraftKings and FanDuel shed between 36% and 41% of their users in the same window. Sports did not visit the prediction markets. It moved in and took the master bedroom. To the board.

TRADE 1: France vs. Spain, Semifinal

Tuesday, Dallas. The purist’s dream and the hardest game on the board to price. France enters as the tournament favorite on the strength of Mbappé’s eight goals and a defense that has gone three matches without conceding, the rare team firing at both ends. Spain counters with the best defensive record in the field, a single goal allowed across the whole tournament, and a bench so deep it functions as a second national team. This is the match the World Cup Winner market has been building toward, and it is essentially a coin flip dressed as a chess match. The value read: France is priced as the favorite to win the whole thing, which means the semifinal line undersells Spain, a side that has made conceding look impossible. Wednesday, Atlanta. Forget the xG models, this one runs on 40 years of grievance. England and Argentina is soccer’s most combustible rivalry, equal parts football and unfinished history, and both teams have bludgeoned their way here rather than glided. England needed a Bellingham rescue act to see off Norway. Argentina leaned on everyone but a subdued Messi to dispatch Switzerland. The market’s problem is that neither side has looked convincing while both keep winning, which is the exact profile that breaks prediction models. The subplot worth the position: Messi, in his farewell tournament, faces England for the first time in his career, in a semifinal, on the 40th anniversary window of the goal English fans still have not forgiven. If you believe in narrative, the market is not pricing enough of it.

TRADE 3: World Cup Golden Boot Winner

The individual race has a new leader and it is the same man dragging France toward the final. Mbappé now sits on eight goals through six games, and with Les Bleus favored to go the distance, he has both the form and the fixtures to chase the first repeat Golden Boot in the award’s history, a feat no man has ever pulled off. Messi, tied with him for much of the tournament, went quiet against Switzerland and now needs Argentina to keep winning just to keep pace. The market has spent this World Cup as a two-man duel between the departing king and his heir, and the heir just pulled ahead on the same night the king went silent. History says this award loves a surprise. This year it looks like it wants a coronation.

The team the crowd backs hardest to lift the trophy is the exact team the first three paragraphs just explained. France is not a 40% favorite despite the Paris suburbs. France is a 40% favorite because of them. Mbappé, Dembélé, and a spine of players developed in open academies a train ride from the Stade de France are the direct financial payoff of a system that lets everyone in. The market is even pricing France at 70% to produce the tournament’s top-scoring nation. This is what a functioning talent pipeline looks like rendered as an order book. TRADE 3: Where Will 2026 Rank Among the Hottest Years on Record?

The most quietly grim market on the board is trading at 59% for 2026 finishing as the second-hottest year ever recorded. Not the hottest. The second. That distinction is the whole story. A market pricing the second-hottest year in recorded history as the base case, with barely a flinch, is the climate version of “Nothing Ever Happens.” The catastrophe is not a spike anymore. It is the new baseline, priced calmly, sorted by 24-hour volume, sitting on the same screen as a Bitcoin ticker and a soccer score. The crowd has fully absorbed a warming planet into its risk models and moved on to the next trade. There is no panic in the number. That is exactly what makes it the scariest one here.
